Horrendous as the drastic fires of California have been, there is something very hypnotic about flames. In a fireplace, the constant dancing and colour shifts of the flames and the feeling of warmth is so meditative. One could sit for ages just gazing at a fire. But California reminded us that fires have another aspect too.
