About Me

Hello, I'm an Irish artist based in Co Kerry. I am inspired by ordinary everyday scenes, aspects of life and objects around me. The creativity it unlocks in me brings me back to my sense of self. Life can be frenetic and there is a lot we can take for granted and not even notice.  My aim is to share with the viewer a space to pause and feel the magic and wonder of the simple and seemingly mundane that surrounds us.

My Work

Working from my home based studio, my paintings begin life as observations and my associated emotions towards the subject matter. I like to explore a variety of subjects from landscapes to still life to peopled scenes. I work mainly in oils as well as watercolours. 

My creative process involves making sketches in order to create a composition that feels right to me. I also take photos as reference. As I work and paint, the piece takes on a life of  its own. Following in this journey, I endeavour to arrive at a final piece that expresses my emotional response.

My paintings are generally realistic, although I am recently drawn towards a more impressionist approach. I like to mix rich, vibrant colours. When working in oils, I love the feeling of generously applying the paint to the canvas with the brush, or knife thus achieving more luminous, textured work.

Background

My art practice stems from early years and has continued throughout my adult life despite pursuing a scientific career.  Recently, the benefit of early retirement has afforded me the opportunity to concentrate on my first love. 

Largely self taught, I frequently attend workshops, courses and master classes to hone my skill set and feed my creativity. My work continues to progress and evolve as I grow and challenge myself as an artist.

 It is a fulfilling experience to be able to express my emotional perspective on life where words fail!
